The walk follows the other competitors for a nice steady climb of 200m to Lake Thomas on a 4WD track, where you get a magnificent view of the Takitimu Mountains and Mount Luxmore (famous for the Kepler Challenge). 
The walk returns on the same track so you can take it at your won pace and enjoy the company and scenery.
Don't forget to pack the camera!
